Q6.
HOW DO YOU FIND A SUPERIOR ROOFING CONTRACTOR?
Answer:
Referrals are obviously the best source for names of credible roofing companies. Ask friends, family members whom they have used in the past. Another good resource is The Colorado Roofing Association (www.cra.org). Keep in mind that cost is only one factor when choosing your roofing contractor. Many factors will influence the price of your roofing project including materials, roof pitch, access to your roof and the contractor you choose.
Q7.
HOW CAN A HOMEOWNER RECOGNIZE WHEN A ROOF HAS PROBLEMS?
Answer:
All too often roof problems are discovered after leaking or other serious damage occurs. Periodic inspections (twice a year) can often uncover cracked, warped, or missing shingles, loose seams and deteriorated flashings, excessive surface granules accumulating in the gutters or downspouts and other visible signs of roof problems. In your home look for cracked paint, stains on interior ceilings, mold and mildew growth, discolored plasterboard and peeling wallpaper as signs of damaged roof areas.
Q8.
WHAT DOES HAIL DO TO A ROOF?
Answer:
1. Accelerates granule loss
2. Accelerates shingle aging
3. Voids manufacturers warranties
4. Leads to other associated problems
Q9.
IS VENTILATION THAT BIG OF A DEAL?
Answer:
In the summer the attic heat builds up, cooling costs increase and shingles can deteriorate prematurely. In the winter moisture builds up inside the attic. Mold and mildew develop, indoor air quality deteriorates, wood can rot and the insulation can loose its R-value. The right ventilation system will protect your attic and roof. It can provide better comfort in your home, help save energy and is a crucial element when installing a new roof. Almost all building codes require ventilation.
Q10.
MY ROOF LEAKS. DO I NEED TO HAVE IT TOTALLY REPLACED?
Answer:
Not necessarily. Leaking can result because some flashings have come loose or because a section of the roof has been damaged. However, a roof failure is generally irreversible and results from improper installation or choice of materials.
Q11.
HOW MUCH WILL THE ROOFING PROCESS DISRUPT MY NORMAL ROUTINE?
Answer:
While it is true that the roofing process is disruptive, we work hard to minimize the impact on you and your family. But for several days, your home does become a construction jobsite. Before we begin work on your home, we will send you a letter outlining the things you can do to prepare for our arrival. You will also receive the name and phone number of your project manager in case you have any questions.
Q12.
IS IT NECESSARY TO TEAR OFF MY OLD ROOF?
Answer:
Recent code changes now mandate that all layers are torn off in most municipalities. Roofing material manufacturers consider it best practice to tear off all old roofing if possible so that the roofer can inspect the decking underneath. Research has shown that fewer layers of roofing make a roof more resistant to hail damage. Depending on what materials were used in the old layers of roofing, it is sometimes impossible to install a new roof over the old. The appearance would be less than acceptable.
Q13.
HOW LONG CAN I EXPECT MY ROOF TO LAST?
Answer:
The condition and lifespan of your roof will depend on the type of roof you choose, the effects of your local environment and the maintenance which the roof has received. Roofing product manufacturers offer a variety of warranties on their products. Take a close look at the warranties on their products to see what responsibilities and financial obligations they will assume if their products fail to reach their expected lifetime.
Q14.
WILL ACADEMY ROOFING SUBCONTRACT MY JOB?
Answer:
Our roofers and gutter installers are employed by our company, covered by our insurance, drive company vehicles, wear company uniforms and abide by strictly enforced work hours. This sets us apart from many other roofing companies who pay their employees on a piecework basis. We feel our system allows us the ability to monitor and manage your job in a more efficient way.
